How To Make Groceries Fit Your Budget: Name Brand vs. Store Brand

Have you ever walked down the grocery isle and noticed that there was a store brand for almost every name brand product? This is something everyone should have noticed by now even if you aren’t a couponer.

Most store brands have the same taste and quality as the name brand products. On very rare occasion have I purchased a store brand and this isn’t true.

OK, you caught me!!!! I do purchase store brands but here is my rule,

The only time that I will buy a store brand product is when I don’t have a coupon for that item and I need it
AND
The name brand isn’t on sale making the store brand more expensive.

Now that you know the rule you can have a plan. For example,
I see that DelMonte Pineapple in a can is on sale for Buy one get one free (save value $2.69). I have a coupon for $.50 off one. My store doubles this coupon and I have two. For a more visual effect see below,

I purchase (2) DelMonte Pineapple at $1.35 each (because you don’t have t purchase two, the price cuts in half)
Use (2) $.50 coupons that double to $1 each
Final price after sale and coupons: $.70 each

I purchase (2) Store Brand Pineapple at $1.69 each (no sale but store brand)
NO coupons to use
Final price after no sale and no coupons: $ 1.69 each

I have saved almost $2 by purchasing name brand vs. store brand.

This is only an example but I come across this type of scenario all the time with name brand vs. store brand. It’s not that it is the NAME BRAND; it’s that it is cheaper and I can save if I need that item. If I need/want to purchase an item then I follow my rule and see which one will save me the most.

My savings can go to other luxuries that I enjoy!

Do you see this often too? Would you buy the store brand if you could save more on the name brand?
