How To Make Groceries Fit Your Budget: Name Brand vs. Store Brand

Have you ever walked down the grocery isle and noticed that there was a store brand for almost every name brand product? This is something everyone should have noticed by now even if you aren’t a couponer.

Most store brands have the same taste and quality as the name brand products. On very rare occasion have I purchased a store brand and this isn’t true.

OK, you caught me!!!! I do purchase store brands but here is my rule,

The only time that I will buy a store brand product is when I don’t have a coupon for that item and I need it
AND
The name brand isn’t on sale making the store brand more expensive.

Now that you know the rule you can have a plan. For example,
I see that DelMonte Pineapple in a can is on sale for Buy one get one free (save value $2.69). I have a coupon for $.50 off one. My store doubles this coupon and I have two. For a more visual effect see below,

I purchase (2) DelMonte Pineapple at $1.35 each (because you don’t have t purchase two, the price cuts in half)
Use (2) $.50 coupons that double to $1 each
Final price after sale and coupons: $.70 each

I purchase (2) Store Brand Pineapple at $1.69 each (no sale but store brand)
NO coupons to use
Final price after no sale and no coupons: $ 1.69 each

I have saved almost $2 by purchasing name brand vs. store brand.

This is only an example but I come across this type of scenario all the time with name brand vs. store brand. It’s not that it is the NAME BRAND; it’s that it is cheaper and I can save if I need that item. If I need/want to purchase an item then I follow my rule and see which one will save me the most.

My savings can go to other luxuries that I enjoy!

Do you see this often too? Would you buy the store brand if you could save more on the name brand?

How To Make Groceries Fit Your Budget: Use the Envelope System AKA Shop with Cash

Budgeting can be one of the hardest things to accomplish. It is a project! You have to train yourself discipline and know that in the end the results will change your life.

Couponing is the same way. You have to discipline yourself to shop mostly with coupons and to shop the deals. Which brings up what you should use to pay your finalized grocery bill after coupons…. CASH.

Some will say that they have great self control and they know when to stop spending. If you are that person then GREAT JOB because, I am not.  I find that when I shop with my debit card I spend more money then when I shop with cash.  That doesn’t mean that I will walk in the store and because I have coupons I can purchase this and that and every other thing on the isle. It simply means that I use coupons and cash to help control my urges for something that I DON’T NEED and don’t have a coupon for!!

So… shopping with cash can be a great budgeting tool when purchasing your groceries. You will then only spend what you have set aside for your grocery budget.

I know several of my friends that use the envelope system for their purchases.

What is the envelope system?
They set aside how much they want to spend on groceries, drug store purchases, and other miscellaneous items.  This is figured on the budget they have set up for their family. If they use all the money in one of the envelopes then they can not pull from the others. If they have leftover money in one then they can use it next week to add to their budget the next week.

I have used this system and it really works.  Once you know your limits and can stick to them you will find that unless you have cash for it then you won’t buy it.

How to Make Groceries Fit Your Budget: Maximize Rain Checks

Have you ever been to the store and found that what you were wanting to stockpile on was all gone?  I have and most of the time I LOVE IT!!!

Here are my reasons for loving rain checks at the grocery store,

1.  My grocery store is my stockpile saver.
I have a lot of items in stockpile and there are times when I wonder, “Where am I going to put another can of canned tomatoes” or “How are we going to eat that many brownies?”
This is the point that I am happy to find the grocery store item is not available because I can go to the customer service desk and ask for the rain check for that item.  Now, the sale timing is on my coupon terms (expiration date) not the stores weekly sale.

2.  My Rain Check waits for my coupon.
When I see an item that is in the sales paper but I don’t have a coupon, I don’t stress (well, sometimes I do! LOL!).  I can still go to the store, find the item and if they are out of stock get the rain check so that when I do get that coupon I will be able to purchase at a great buy.

What is a rain check?
Rain checks are papers given by a store to allow you to get an item that is offered at the sales price at another date.  A rain check can only be given for items that are out of stock.

Who offers rain checks?
Most all stores have rain checks.  Always ask!

What should I beware of when it comes to rain checks?
Not all rain checks work the same.  At CVS you can get a rain check for an item that will give you back Extra Care Bucks where as, Walgreens will give you a rain check for the items but not the register rewards with it.  This is one disadvantage to Walgreens.
You should always understand when or if they expire.  Look to see if it is printed on the rain check and if not, ask.

Save by playing the waiting game!  It takes time and patients for a coupon to be used to it’s full potential.

Next time you are in a store and you see someone with 10 boxes of cereal or 5 bottles of laundry detergent go up and tell them how awesome that it is that they are able to save for their family and for others.    Then, GO GET THAT RAIN CHECK!

How to Make Groceries Fit Your Budget: Stockpiling

I love the comment on yesterday’s article by momma-lana, “I have such a huge stockpile now that we can that we can eat just about anything we want.”
In my pantry I have around 8 jars of pasta sauces. They are not all the same brand or flavor. I got them really cheap or free by using coupons when they were on sale. Stockpiling products will help you with your menu planning and also help with your grocery budget.

No, I don’t need all that pasta for this week and I have had way more than 8 at a time. If I used all that pasta sauce up in a week my husband would stop eating my food by the second day of pasta. Instead, I will save the pasta sauces for weeks to come and serve them as pizza sauce, soup thickening and much more.

How many should I buy?

As many as your budget permits for stockpiling.

That doesn’t mean to go to the grocery store and buy 20 things of pasta sauce for $.50 a jar because it is cheap and you can. Most likely, there will be another brand of pasta sauce on sale several weeks to come and it will be even cheaper or free. The basic principle would be to stockpile enough to cover you for a couple of weeks.

Some groceries will expire before you will be able to use all of them and then you would have wasted and not saved!

If you want to purchase more go right ahead but, think about donating to a charity, helping a neighbor, or what I love best… be the secret giver!

Also, don’t spend all your grocery money to stockpile and then get home and say, “I just went to the store but I have no idea what we are eating for supper.” You will then end up calling for take out or going through a drive through. Your budget will be blown!!!

What if I go to the store and they don’t have anymore?

There have been plenty of times when I have walked into the grocery store with a mission to stock up on an item but, I find that they are all gone.

I do not say, “ I can’t believe she just purchased all they had.” Instead, I write the item down on a small notepad and at the end of my grocery shopping I stop by the customer service desk and ask for a rain check.

I have trouble putting items together in a meal after I have stockpiled.

I can totally relate to this. I love the website www.allrecipes.com because I can enter ingredients that I have on hand and it will pull up several recipe ideas that I can use for a great meal.

Do you stockpile? How has it helped your grocery budget?

How To Make Groceries Fit Your Budget: Have a Menu Plan

Now we need to save money on our groceries by getting what we need.  We need a plan or a menu for the week using the deals that are posted on this site combining them with coupons and other items on sale throughout the stores flyer.

Why should I have a menu plan?

Simple.  If you have a plan then your are most likely to stick to it then to stray away and get off track.

How do I start?

Every week we post the free and cheap grocery deals available at several stores.  Use these with coupons to get a basic plan started.  Then use other items offered on sale to help with your planning.  If you have to have an item and want to see if there is a coupon available, then you can use our coupon database to search and print or locate that coupon.

Here is a simple meal idea for tomorrow’s Publix week.  Please note that this might not be the best prices on chicken but for this scenerio it will do.

Purchase 1 1/2 lb. of Chicken Breast (cost around $5.99 total)
(I say 1 1/2 lb.  because realistically speaking they never put meat in 1 lb. increaments)
Purchase Lowery’s 30 minute marinade (cost $.49 after coupon)
Purchase (4) Florida Sweet Corn ($.25 each) total $1.00
Purchase Luigi’s Real Italian Ice (box of 24) total: $.50 after coupon

(grill the chicken and corn for a tasty meal)

Your total purchase will cost you around $7.79.
Making it $1.99 each for a family of 4.

You will have plenty of the Luigi’s Real Itatlian Ice for several meals throughout this week.

You can’t eat out at a restaurant for that plus, save that tip money and pay yourself for making a great cheap meal that brings the family together.

So get the flyer out and print the grocery deals and make a plan for what great dishes you can make.

Stay tuned tomorrow for part 2 of  Having A Menu Plan

How To Make Groceries Fit Your Budget: Know What Your Spending

Today, we are out for a more positive grocery budget outlook from yesterday’s, “ Change Your Train of Thought” and we have taken a couple of days to grip our new percentage guidelines. Now what?

Know What You Are Spending. You can’t start a grocery budget without knowing what you are already spending. What is the fun in watching it go down if you have no idea where it was in the first place?

Easy Steps,

1. Take the calendar from off the fridge and get ready to write down some numbers. Or use a blank calendar here.
2. Go online or look on your paper bank statement and write down the amounts that were spent at the grocery store on your calendar. Write the amounts on the dates that the check/debit cleared to give you a better perspective on a weekly basis.
3. Total your spending for the month or at least for the last 4-6 weeks.

The amount that you come up with from the steps above will give you your actual spending amounts.

Before couponing, how much did you spend in groceries?

Do you hear, ” If I coupon then that means I can’t eat what I want” or “I don’t have time to coupon”.

Some of you that got off the floor from reading your grocery percentage and decided that the statements above are true and not worth it.

If you have a negative attitude then you will never succeed at what you want to accomplish, especially with couponing and budgeting. You have to train yourself to have a positive outlook and know that in the end it can make a difference with your finances, your shopping experiences, and your life.

You can not change your grocery budget without the effort to do so. I challenge you to start committing to positive results and change.
